How To Create A Comma Delimited File

Create a File Using the Comma Separated Values (.CSV) Format (Teacher)

In computing, a .CSV (comma-separated values) file is a delimited text file that uses a comma to separate values. A CSV file stores tabular data in plain text. Each line of the file is a data record. Each record consists of one or more fields, separated by commas without using spaces.

Pro-Tips:

  • You must use a file in the .CSV format when you're importing a list of students to one of your classes.
  • If you are creating a list from scratch, you can assign the same password to all your students. Later on, at the time you're importing the .CSV file, you'll be able to choose if you want your students to set their own names and passwords when they log in for the first time. The options will appear in the "On First Login" section (shown in the image below).
  • Even though the inclusion of an email address for a student is not mandatory on Typing.com, when uploading the CSV file, the data field header HAS to exist.

Let's get started.

Step 1: If you already have a list of students, you can jump ahead to step 3. If you don't have a list of students, you can make a copy of the spreadsheet template HERE.
To make a copy:

  • Go to File
  • Click Make a Copy.

Step 2: Once you have your own copy ready, you need to make sure that the titles of the columns in your spreadsheet match the titles as shown below.(These fields are case sensitive so they need to match uppercase, lowercase, symbols, etc.)

  • Student_Username
  • Password
  • First_Name
  • Last_Name
  • Email

Step 3:Fill in the spreadsheet with your student's information (if you haven't already)

IMPORTANT: To avoid any errors at the time of importing the contacts please follow the instructions below carefully:

  • The Student_Username field and Email must be unique and cannot have duplicate entries in our database.
  • The Password can have letters, numbers, and symbols. (e.g. "awesome123$")Optional: This password can be the same for all your students when creating this spreadsheet. The students will be able to change it later on upon their first log in if you have selected this option.
  • You must delete any and all empty rows at the bottom. To do this, scroll to the bottom of the list and select the first empty white row. Then, using your keyboard press shift + command + ↓ for Mac or  shift + ctrl + ↓ for PC. This will help you select all the empty white cells at the bottom. Then right click over the highlighted cells and click "Delete Rows ## - ##"
  • Even though the inclusion of an email address for a student is not mandatory on Typing.com, when uploading the CSV file, the data field header HAS to exist.

There should not be any white space below your last student.

Step 4: Once everything is in place and you've filled in the sheet with your student's information, you are going to download this spreadsheet as a Comma Separated Values (.CSV) file.

  • Go to File
  • Go to Download As
  • Click Comma Separated Values (.CSV, current sheet)

That's it! You have created and downloaded a Comma Separated Values (.CSV) file.😊
