New Kinetic Sand Drawing Tables By Bruce Shapiro

Bruce Shapiro has dedicated the past 25 years to exploring motion control as a medium for artistic expression. Using CNC technology, he has created art installation pieces all around the world. The Sisyphus table is the first of its kind, a museum-quality kinetic art sculpture for your home and office.

In Greek mythology, Sisyphus was condemned to roll a boulder up a mountain for all eternity. In Shapiro's art, Sisyphus is a kinetic sculpture that rolls a ball through sand, forever creating and erasing beautiful patterns. It works via a wifi-connected robot moving a magnet beneath a bed of sand, that allows users to curate and create these designs right from the Sisyphus app. Sisyphus is not just kinetic artwork, it is also an instrument. The "tracks" it plays are just as important as the sculpture, much like musical instruments and the songs played on them. Shapiro hoped that by sharing Sisyphus — into more hands, eyes, and minds — people who are moved by it may spend their time and energies composing for it.

To bring Sisyphus out of the museum and into people's homes and workplace, he and a team of local makers in Minneapolis, Minnesota USA, launched a Kickstarter campaign: Sisyphus — The Kinetic Art Table. Debuting 4 years ago, it quickly became and remains the highest funded art project in Kickstarter's 11-year history. Fueled by the success of this inaugural product, the company Sisyphus Industries was born.

Today Sisyphus Industries continues to improve and innovate kinetic art products — from tempered glass topped tables, to the recent addition of the Mini – a table-top model, Sisyphus is now in office buildings, hotels, healthcare facilities, Senior Living centers and private residences of all kinds across 35 countries. It has a thriving community of enthusiasts and track composers, which have created 400+ tracks that can be shared and played by all via the Sisyphus mobile app. With in-app options to adjust ball speed, light configuration, brightness, color, and the ability to create your own tracks, thousands of people around the world are now creating and curating their own kinetic art.
